Police said the incident occurred when the student went to her during the lessons period seeking admission to the class.
He was told that the matter will be dealt with at another time and he left. However, he returned as the teacher was closing the building and stabbed her in the left side before escaping, Police said.
Up to press time, the suspect, a Third Form student, had not yet been arrested, Police said.
This newspaper understands the boy was already attending the teacher’s private lessons but turned up for classes irregularly.
Bhoj subsequently called his parents and on Tuesday he turned up at the lessons place to pay her the fees owed when he attacked and stabbed her, sources said.
The Guyana Chronicle understands that she was stabbed four times and was taken to hospital in a taxi. Bhoj, who was walking to her car, when the student struck, looked back and recognised the attacker after being stabbed, sources said.
She was yesterday reported in stable condition at the city hospital. A hospital official told this newspaper that the teacher was in a serious condition and suffering from multiple stab wounds.
The Ministry of Education in a press release issued on the incident, said the rising number of incidents of violence in schools or related incidents is regrettable and everyone should be involved to bring an end to it.
Many schools are dealing with incidents of violence and parents can no longer sit on the sidelines hoping that the education system alone will deal with this issue, the ministry said.
“Parents must get involved now. More emphasis must be placed on parents being good role models and instilling good moral values in children,” it urged.
The ministry said it has implemented the Life Skills Education programme in Primary and Secondary schools to provide students with the skills needed for resolving conflict, dealing with their emotions and expressing their feelings.
However, according to the ministry, this is insufficient, especially with all the violence that children are exposed to through the media, in their homes and in society.
It is urging social institutions, school administrators, teachers and parents to work together to find realistic solutions to deal with this very worrying situation.Several students have recently been charged with wounding teachers and other students, amid worrying reports of rising violence among students and in schools here and in the Caribbean.Guyana Chronicle

Some thoughts on the Oliver Hinckson Affair...

It was a privilege and a blessing to share space and conversations with Oliver Hinckson, and numerous others who were members of the GDF, both in Guyana, and in New York City. It was lessons learnt in the GDF, which are certainly the defining moments of my life. I did not share conversations with Hinckson on a regular basis. However, on those occasions, I was of the opinion Hinckson fashioned me his baby brother – that was certainly fine with me.

I do not know the details of this rationale however; I assume approaching 60 years, old Hinckson is no threat to overthrow the government. Again, I do not know. I just wonder if Hinckson is being scapegoat as was Raymond Sattaur in 1966. I remember Luckhoo with his flowery language as he sentenced Hinckson in perhaps, the late 1960s or the early 1970s. The actual date escapes me.

Hinckson military skills maybe the monkey on his back. Hinckson is perhaps the finest Guyanese soldier who graduated at Sandhurst. Lord knows what Hinckson could have achieved were he interested in politics. Note numerous Sandhurst alumni were Heads of state in several nations. Again, I am not privy to the facts –therefore, the concern is whether Hinckson is made a political prisoner must be addressed. Call it the Arnold Rampersaud syndrome, however, the Benschop affair, is a vivid reminder of the PPP/C attitude of do as the PNC did. I am of the impression – such notions are as unfortunate as they are ridiculous. Whatever the situation is. Clearly, the Government of Guyana must not prosecute innocent folks.

M'lilwana Osanku
